Our friends at Capitol Hill Village have invited NNV members and volunteers to a number of events and programs designed to celebrate and support LGBTQ older adults:
LGBTQ Social Hour – June 7 and 21 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Connect with LGBTQ folks of different ages. These virtual gatherings are for LGBTQ individuals who live in DC only. Click here to learn more or to register.
Pride Movie Screening - June 22 from 6:30 - 9:30pm at As You Are Bar (500 8th St SE, Washington, DC 20003)
This indoor event is a collaboration between As You Are Bar and Capitol Hill Village. Watch and discuss "Somebody Waits for Me", "Older Than What", and "Not Another Second"; which focus on the experiences of LGBTQ older adults. Anyone can attend. Supporting LGBTQ Grandchildren – June 29 from 10:00 -11:30 am This virtual event is the first in a series focused on supporting LGBT grandchildren. This event is for anyone who is or may become a grandparent of an LGBTQ grandchild, or wants to support someone who is. Click here to learn more or to register.
Did you know that the District of Columbia has an LGBTQ+ Veterans Community Outreach Relations Specialist? Fallon Williams has joined the DC Mayor’s Office of Veteran Affairs. While serving in this role, Fallon’s key initiatives include advocating for research data identifying the LGBTQ+ Veteran Population, linking 114,000 service members discharged under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell to discharge upgrade resources, and ensuring LGBTQ+ veterans have safe spaces to receive the benefits and care they are entitled to. Understanding Gender Pronouns – You’ve likely seen pronouns after some people’s email signatures or names on Zoom. Sharing our gender pronouns are not just a new trend. By being mindful of pronouns in our everyday life, we are creating a culture of inclusion for LGBTQ youth and adults alike. Through a centrally-coordinated, local network of screened volunteers and vetted professional providers, Northwest Neighbors Village offers its members transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping assistance, home repairs and handyman help, computer and technology assistance, access to social and cultural activities and more.
