Getting out of the house is so important to our physical and mental health. Here is an array of options and services that can help you get out and stay active and engaged in your community.
Considerations if you drive or have mobility challenges:
Driver's License Requirements for Mature Drivers: District residents who are 70 years old and over must have a licensed medical practitioner complete a Fitness to Drive certification in order to obtain a new driver's license or renew an existing one. Renewals can take place in person at a DMV Service Center. The closest service center is located in Georgetown, click here for information on location and office hours. Here, you may also take the vision test or submit a completed eye report from your physician. You may also be eligible to renew online if you have the proper documentation from your physician. If you elect to discontinue driving for safety or other reasons, the DMV offers free identification cards for District residents 65 and over. For more information visit www.dcdmvseniors.com.
Disability Parking Tags & Placards: Disability parking tags and placards are available for District residents with mobility impairments or other limitations. This allows you, or the person driving you, to park in Handicap spots that are close to the entrance and often offer greater accessibility. You can self-certify and apply in person at a DMV Service Center or apply online if your medical practitioner completes a section of the application. NNV Full Members who have a disability placard may use it on volunteer rides. Click here for more information and to apply.
Here's Information to Help You Get Around When You Don't Have a Car:
Metro: We are fortunate to live in a city with multiple transportation options. Metrorail and Metrobus are excellent options for getting around in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In fact, Metro offers a Senior SmarTrip card that offers 50% off Metrorail and Metrobus fares and other reduced fare programs in MD and VA. You can apply for the Senior SmarTrip card at Commuter Stores or at all Montgomery County Libraries. Click here to learn more. If using Metro is a challenge for you, you may qualify for MetroAccess. MetroAccess is a shared ride public transportation service that provides door-to-door service. The application for this service requires a medical practitioner's certification. Click here to learn more about eligibility and to apply.
Villages: In addition to Metro, local Villages, including NNV, provide volunteer transportation to Full Members. This is a great option for planned rides. Not only do members enjoy getting a ride from a friendly neighbor, Village membership also offers a wide range of benefits, including social programming, referrals, and professional support. Rideshare: Rideshare options like Uber and Lyft, as well as taxis, are excellent options for your immediate travel needs. If using your cell phone to manage rides is intimidating or not accessible to you, check out GoGo which connects you to rideshare services with a simple phone call.
