Benjamin Franklin wrote, "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." We prepare our taxes on time to avoid penalties, but preparing for our death is easier to put off for a later time. Without a sense of urgency, other things take priority. However, delaying this task can have dire consequences that can impact your healthcare, finances, and relationships. That is why Northwest Neighbors Village (NNV) is offering the chance for members to work on end-of-life planning in a small group.
NNV Board members Monica Knorr and Linda Lateana, both of whom are clinical social workers, will walk members through the documents necessary for making your health care wishes known in the case of an emergency or prolonged illness. Monica and Linda will review the File of Life, the Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST) form, and the My End of Life Wishes workbook created by Compassion and Choices.
This two-part program is designed to introduce members to the documents, provide opportunities to fill out forms, answer questions, and provide follow up support. Please plan to attend both sessions, which are scheduled on Monday, November 3rd and Monday, November 10th at 11:00 am. Click here to sign up for this members only event. (Signing up for session 1 will automatically register you for both sessions.)
If planning for the future is important to you, please join us for Know Your Options. NNV's Know Your Options is a series of monthly programs that are designed to provide information about services and providers who can help you navigate the changing landscape of aging. Members can enjoy a tour and lunch at Ingleside at Rock Creek on October 28th. All neighbors are encouraged to join Iona Senior Services on November 17th on Zoom for an overview of their programs and services, including their Dementia Navigator Program. On December 4th, members are invited to visit Forest Hills of DC for a tour and lunch. Click here for more information and to sign up – while there, check out our archived videos on homecare, senior living, and services offered by the Dept. of Aging and Community Living (DACL).
Through a centrally-coordinated, local network of screened volunteers and vetted professional providers, Northwest Neighbors Village offers its members transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping assistance, home repairs and handyman help, computer and technology assistance, access to social and cultural activities and more.
