Want to Stay Active and Engaged in Retirement? Get Involved in Your Local Village!

Earlier this week, the New York Times posted an article titled, "What Happens to Your Brain When You Retire". The message was clear, while retirement can be a well-deserved break, inactivity can lead to cognitive and physical decline. Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce these risks. Read on to see how your Village can help!

Going from a busy routine to an open schedule can have a negative impact on your cognition and mood. The article suggests creating a plan for how you want to spend your time in retirement before you retire. Not only does making this plan give you something to look forward to, but it also makes it easier to get into a new routine once you are no longer working 9 to 5.

Adjusting to retirement can be challenging for people who enjoy and value their work. This is the time to find a way to contribute in new and meaningful ways. In fact, according to this article, "Studies suggest that people with a sense of purpose tend to experience less age-related cognitive decline." This is the perfect opportunity to volunteer, take care of grandchildren, mentor young professionals, or care for a pet. The possibilities are endless and unique to your interests and abilities.

Staying socially connected is essential. In 2023 the U.S. Surgeon General declared social isolation and loneliness an epidemic and issued an advisory on the healing effects of social connection and community. We know that cognition declines with reduced socialization. The good news is, social isolation is preventable. Make time to get together with people who make you feel good, and get to know new people in your neighborhood, at your gym, or wherever you enjoy spending time.

The good news is that Northwest Neighbors Village (NNV) provides opportunities to ease the transition into retirement. Become a volunteer and enjoy the satisfaction of making a difference in your community. Our volunteers help to reduce social isolation among older neighbors while assisting with practical tasks like rides, technology support, and simple home repair. Many new retirees also find meaningful connections through Village membership. Become a Supporting Member to meet new people, enjoy connecting with others at local coffee gatherings, yoga class, and book clubs, or start your own affinity group! Find your place at NNV by visiting our website or give us a call 202-935-6060. Looking for a Village in another part of the city or country? Visit Village to Village Network.
